Matt Rocks has been surrounded by music from day he was born. His grandmother's piano, his father's barbershop quartets, his mothers choreography and his sisters singing - music was a fact of life.
It wasn't until his cousin dropped a guitar into his hands at age 13 that music went from "must do" to "love to do". Music stopped being about rehersing and playing other peoples music and became about creating his own.
Starting out as a solo artist in 1998 as Matthew Rocks, Matt went the band route in 2000 with "Ocean" which relied on his songwriting and vocals to define the group. They played NYC's The Bitter End and Arlene's Grocery and Baltimore's Artscape along their journey, and had some local radio play before Ocean disbanded. Rocks went on to form "Calling All Cars" which emerged in '05 joining forces with lead guitarist from Ocean, Brett Wilke.
In 2006 Rocks experienced the tragic death of his friend and lead guitarist Brett Wilke. He chose to leave Baltimore in 2007 for Portland, Oregon to record his debut solo album with engineer/producer/bassist Rob Bartleson at Haywire Recording Studios (Wilco, Jeff Hanson of Kill Rockstars, Slackjaw). Honing in on his love for a big sound and Brittish art Pop/Rock textures from the likes of Pink Floyd, The Beatles, Catherine Wheel, and Radiohead, along with influences from Grant Lee Phillips, Elliot Smith and the Charlatans UK, he wrote and orchestrated a majority of the instrumentation on the record. Rocks built the sound using trombone, trumpet, flugelhorn, violin, cello, double bass, piano, organs/keyboards, slide guitar, saw, banjo and gospel singers. Rocks sung vocals, and played electric and acoustic guitar, bass, piano, keyboards/organs and vibes.
Rocks' album "A Window is Open" features Ryan Diehl, one of Baltimore's finest and most versatile drummers, on 4 out of the 9 songs. He was recorded at Big Bang Audio in Baltimore by Ronnie Sentmeyer. Diehl owns the helm of the rhythm section for Rocks' live shows along with Nashville session bassist Jay Turner. Diehl has played with numerous bands worldwide and The Ryan Diehl Jazz Trio has traveled throughout Europe and Asia.
Lead guitarist Sean Schreiber is from Baltimore and has been a guitarist for more than 20 years with a strong background in jazz composition and music theory. Sean studied commercial jazz guitar composition at Peabody Institute of Johns Hopkins, CCBC, and Towson University.
Matt Rocks performs solo and with his band as a 4 piece which is in the process of building a group to include the instrumentation of the album.
